Interview Of Adam Young Master Mind Behind Owl City
Adam Young, the mastermind behind Owl City, has been on the fast track to success with his skyrocketing popularity all thanks to myspace and his hit single, Fireflies. His bubblegum electro-pop sounds are hard to escape after the first listen—making fans want more from this addicting artist. Recently azTeen caught up with him to talk about inspirations, his innermost thoughts, and some unveiled secrets.

What is the main reason and motivation for writing your songs?
I just love to create. I started writing out of boredom and haven't looked back since.

Besides insomnia, what/who is an influence for your music?
Adam: I listen to mostly instrumental ambient music, oddly enough. I don't listen to much music with lyrics, so a lot of different things come into play when it comes to influence. I really connect with certain moods that I discover in film soundtracks. My two biggest musical influences are Jonathan Ford from Unwed Sailor, and composer Thomas Newman (WALL-E, Six Feet Under, Finding Nemo, A Series of Unfortunate Events).

Have you've had any personal encounters with the less fortunate (or someone deeply struggling with life) while on tour?
Adam: I've certainly been exposed to a lot more of the world than I ever thought I would see in the past year, the good and the bad.

Have you had any dreams that impacted your music in any way? If so, what was the dream? If you've never had this happen, what is a dream that has impacted your life greatly?
Adam: I daydream a lot about the deepest place in the ocean called Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. So who knows what kind of song that might turn into?

Owl CityWhat do your lyrics mean to you, and what do you hope to give to your listeners through your lyrics?
Adam: I love abstract music, and writing to suggest rather than inform is much more interesting to me. As a writer, I like to let people make their own conclusions about my music, rather than tell them exactly what to feel when they hear a song. So I let the listener decide what to make of the lyrics.

What is the best moment that you've had on stage?
Adam: There have been so many! I really can't name just one.

So you've collaborated with some great artists like Matt Thiessen and Breanne Düren; If you could do a collaboration with any of your current songs with any artist, which song would it be and who would it be with?
Adam: It's a toss-up between Shaquille O'Neal and Hulk Hogan.

If you could change something about the world with the power of a button, what would it be and why?
Adam: Free pizza on every corner.

Are there any moments where you've been truly embarrassed on stage?
Adam: Someone threw underwear at me on stage. I screamed like a girl.

If you could be Willy Wonka, what would be your ideal concoction?
Adam: A combination of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Oreos, and powdered donuts. If that is at all possible, you let me know.

What is one TV show or movie that you just can't get enough of?
Adam: Finding Nemo<>. The music in that movie gives me goose bumps.

What is one thing that fans do not know about you?
Adam: I can't read with socks on.
