Haute on Campus: Fall Couture 2010

Possibly my favorite fashion events of the year are the Couture shows. Fiercely fashionable models parading down the most prolific runways in the world, donning absolutely breathtaking clothes, hot out of the studio – what could be better? This year’s fall and winter collections have not disappointed the world in the slightest. As our jaws drop, we turn our eyes to our wardrobes, preparing to coordinate our clothes accordingly with the newest trends for the coming season.

The runways of Chanel brought forth rich, drenched shades of plum and raspberry, portrayed in knee-length pencil skirts and sleek jackets, with an occasional shimmer or ruffle. Sequins and boots burst into fashion once more, particularly in metallic shades. Also strutting underneath the magnificent lion that decorated the circular runway were remnants of spring’s floral designs, poking their way into fall, and many exquisite half-length sleeves. A common thread of many shows included my favorite signature makeup design – a bright red lip and dark, smoky eyes. Our friends at Valentino brought us delightful long, sheer sleeves ranging in colors from white to ballerina pink to dramatic black, while Dior’s exhibit at the Rodin Museum channeled vintage glam into modern glory, with fitted corset-like garments and exquisite netted veils straight out of the history books.

So how exactly does one bring a little couture into her fall wardrobe? Couture is all about being sophisticated and glamorous, while being bold and daring and completely unique. If you’re looking for the berry colors, go for single-shade, top-and-bottom numbers, about mid-thigh to knee length. Faded florals might make a splash at your school’s opening dance, wouldn’t it? Avoid bright colors, then, as these are too reminiscent of spring, but go for darker, larger flower prints, such as those available at stores such as Maurices and Nordstom. As for the vintage beauty, there is no store I can recommend more fully than Forever21. Their veiled headbands and flapper-girl style dresses and skirts make for a nice touch (as do, of course, the prices).

With school only – gasp – a few weeks away, we’re beginning to put together our back-to-school wardrobes. However, using the advice we’re receiving from the most magnificent runways, straight out of the most fashionable place on the planet, I have to say I’m almost looking forward to knockin’ ‘em dead on the first day of school. Almost.
