There are a lot of distinctive landmarks around the Mountain Pointe campus, perhaps none more recognizable than the Beach Club, which welcomes all to our parking lot.“It is the only beach in Arizona that we can chill at,” says Pride quarterback Austin Lahr, a junior, “I have never come across another school with palm trees, sand, and an eating area that we have with the beach club.”
Granted, the palm trees are painted, but they still seem realistic to everyone who drives by. Students often jokingly say, “Let’s go get a tan after school,” but with Arizona’s scorching sun, no one actually does it.
Nearby is Mountain Pointe’s Tutoring Center. Within a few seconds a student can go from hanging out at the beach to studying hard to continue help further the school’s Excellence in Education rating. Here students tutor other students, allowing them to relate on a different level than they do with their teachers. Also memorable is the School Library, which spans nearly half of the second floor.
No one wants to make memories in another Mountain Pointe landmark: the Sweep Room. Usually home to about 30 students per class hour, Sweep is where stragglers who don’t make it to class on time go. Although a lot of schools now have sweep rooms, Mountain Pointe was one of the first to implement the program.
Some students, especially the football players, believe there’s no place on the Mountain Pointe campus as sacred as Karl Kiefer Stadium, named for the winningest high school football coach in Arizona history and the father of Pride football. Kiefer, a Tempe native, retired in 2005 after coaching more than 40 years and amassing a 309-138-3 record.Mountain Pointe Facts.
