If you’ve ever heard of the Chaparral Improv show, you probably already know about the pineapple.
The Improv show is held once a month and performed by a cast of six students and one guest star per show. Although the show is held in a very small room called the “darkroom,” that doesn’t stop Chaparral students from planning their schedules around it.
“I go to the Improv show every month and just go to dinner at CPK with my friends early, to be assured a seat,” says Jenn Greer. “It’s the (equivalent) of Shea 14 on a Friday night.”
A major way the cast advertises for the show is by carrying around a pineapple at school the day of the show and wearing the cast shirts. This is a tradition randomly made up by a cast member years ago, before the first show was performed. “Although getting ready is nerveracking and almost impossible to do, as the audience chooses the topics, I just have fun and be myself,” says cast member Shira Mizel.
Very similar to the show Who’s Line is it Anyway?, the cast performs acts and games like charades, separated by the ringing of the gong, of random topics, things, places and people, yelled out by the audience.
“The room gets pretty hot, and I usually sit on the floor, but I wouldn’t miss it,” says sophomore Sydney Croft. “It’s my favorite Friday-night activity beside the football games,”
