Chapparral 2.0

When Chaparral first opened in 1972, the main academic building was designed as a “school without walls,” a not-uncommon building trend of that era. Updates have been made since then, but it wasn’t until August 2006 that the campus began a complete renovation.

One of the new and improved landmarks at Chaparral is the football field, one of the few areas of campus that retains its original location. Last year, the field was renovated with brand new turf and a bright red image of a firebird in its center.

“The field is important because it creates even more excitement around football and the season, which brings the students together,” says senior and varsity football player Ryan Holmes.

As strange as it may seem, the senior parking lot is also a kind of landmark at Chaparral these days and one of the only parts of the school that has remained during the chaos of construction. Seniors are going crazy trying to get a parking spot due to the limitations that exist right now. Every student that returns to visit will remember the parking lot.

Due to construction, Chaparral students are forced to let go of certain special landmarks that once existed and look to other traditions to carry on the Chaparral legacy. One thing that will never change is the school spirit.

“In the former 200 building, guys would go through the buildings with boom boxes and play loud music and kids would participate in dance-offs in the middle of the hallways,” says junior Sophie Cohen.
