Celebrating A Roaring Decade.
What wonders a decade can garner.The Millennium Tigers have occupied the annex campus of rival Agua Fria since 1999, and the expansion of its space and student body has not ceased in the past 10 years.
Simply spending time on campus does not reveal the school’s age; it could possibly be brand new, or it could be 30 years old. Even to those students who attend Millennium, the 10-year anniversary is not touted grandly. With the exception of an all-color, “10”-themed yearbook, there are no other indications that this year marks our 10-year anniversary. Perhaps that is because students and staff will not celebrate when they know they can continue to improve.
What is apparent at Millennium is the spirit. Whether we go into a game thinking we might get clobbered or looking to wipe the floor with our opponents, students roll out their purple, silver and black. Every Friday is “Frenzy Friday,” and shy freshmen, confident seniors and everyone in between throws on their spirit clothes. “Being a varsity cheerleader is all about having Tiger spirit,” says junior Chelsie Robinson. “We try our hardest to improve and change things up every year. It’s never dull.”
Millennium, currently a 4A-I school, will grow to 5A status next year. Although Millennium athletics will have harder competition than it has ever seen, our academics are clearly getting better every year. Millennium is the only West Valley high school to receive the “Excelling” mark two years in a row. The upcoming school year also marks the beginning of the International Baccalaureate program at Millennium, another West Valley first.
Whether it be in class, on the field or even an extracurricular club, Millennium is rocking and improving every year. As Mr. John Shalongo, a teacher and coach who has been with the school since its opening, put it, “We’re good at everything. We’re the perfect high school.”
