The Things I Remember

I remember the day I found out I couldn’t see you.
I read the e-mail and my heart fell to my knees.
I gripped the sheets and sobbed until all of the air was sucked out my lungs.
My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes and whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

I remember driving in the car with her.
Windows down, listening to ‘Sooner or later’ by Rookie of the Year.
She was wearing her flowery dress that I thought made her look five
And the music swelled so loud I thought my ear drums would pop.
That was the moment I realized her dreams are going to come true.

These are the things I remember.

I remember walking up to you the day before you left to go home.
I was wearing my country thunder outfit, ready to go to my last dance.
You wrapped me in a bear hug and let me cry about everything.
Then you did something you hadn’t done since I was a little girl.
You kissed the top of my head and murmured. “Everything’s going to be alright.”

I remember the summer days of being lazy on your time off from the bank.
We painted toe nails on the deck, and made a mess of my dark blue polish.
I told you I loved you and that I was glad you were my aunt.
I was eight when I realized I had your love unconditionally.

These are the things I remember.

I remember walking in your room when I was five years old.
You were sitting on the floor against the bed, your hair in a French twist.
It was the first time I had ever seen you cry.
I asked you what was wrong and you quickly turned away to wipe your tears.
I had this overwhelming sadness in my heart that all I could do was sit down and cry with you.
I knew then that we were linked in every way a person could be linked.

These are the things I remember.
