Fairy Godmothers to the Rescue
Prom is a high-school experience that delivers special memories for a lifetime. From
the perfect date to the gorgeous dress, girls start planning for this dance months in
advance. There’s no denying that prom is expensive, though, and when girls don’t have
the means to buy the dress of their dreams, their fairy godmothers step in.Two groups fill this gap in the Valley of the Sun Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Operation Fairy Godmother is a national organization that collects donations of gently used prom dresses, jewelry and shoes and sells them at a modest price to girls whose financial situation would normally exclude them from going to prom. There are Fairy Godmother organizations scattered across the country that hold annual Prom Fairs for girls to come and shop for that perfect prom dress. Girls who have donated their dresses from past proms receive a discount coupon for any upcoming Prom Fair as well as a tax credit.
Since its founding in 2001 in Philadelphia, the Fairy Godmother organization has distributed more than 2,000 prom dresses. For more information on Operation Fairy Godmother or to sign up to volunteer for the 2008 Phoenix Prom Fair, visit www.fairygodmothersinc.com.
A newer similar group, now in its third year, is also seeking prom dresses and accessories. For more information on how to donate to or receive help from the Phoenix-based Calling All Fairy Godmothers, call Janet Fitzgerald at (623) 451-0341.
