Interview:
Taylor Sternberg of Jersey Boys

Taylor Sternberg Making his debut in a professional theatre production, Taylor Sternberg has taken on the role as an understudy for 'Frankie Valli', as well as multiple other characters in the First National Tour of Jersey Boy. As a talented actor, singer, and dancer, Sternberg stands out without a doubt on stage. Entertaining sold out audiences across the United States has provided him with not only profitable experience, but many life long friendships and a new understanding of the Broadway industry. Knowing what he wants, and what he's capable of has definitely helped him get where he is now. This noteworthy actor is a treat to audience members, everytime he graces the stage. Even while traveling with the Sherry Company, he was kind enough to take out the time to answer a few questions about the show, as well as his acting experiences.

How did you find out about Jersey Boys?
I was in college at the time, a few friends of mine had seen it, and talked about it in class. And I thought "Jeez, a musical that starts with a rap number? That sounds plain crazy!" I didn't think much of it until my classmates started saying that I would be good for the show. (And I didn't know that the point of the rap number was to make you think "What is this?" until I really saw it. Then it made sense!)

Where you able to see the performance before auditioning?
No, I was in Los Angeles, and didn't have time to go to NY to see anything. The last time I was there (before rehearsals began in NY) was Spring 2004.

What scenes did you read for in your audition?
I initially read for Joe Pesci, and in callbacks, I read for Frankie and Joey.

Which role(s) do you play?
I cover 4 roles: Joey, Barry Belson, Hank Majewski, and Frankie Valli.

Have you had any surprises when onstage performing for an audience?
In San Francisco, I busted open my nose. I was pushing on the long engineer table right before "Opus 17" and the table drifted into a bridge support pole. I kept moving, and as I did, my nose smacked into the table. I was out for 2 performances as Joey.

Who, if any of the cast members have you grown close to?
When working in a collaborative environment, it's hard to NOT grow close with everyone. We're a big family, we support each other, and we all share different, great relationships.

Which cities have you enjoyed the most?
Los Angeles, because it's always great to be home, as well as San Diego and Costa Mesa.

What is the most important thing that you’ve taken from this particular show?
Being that this is my first professional production, I have learned extensive things about the Broadway Industry, how to live life on tour, what it's like to play to 3000 seat houses... you name it, I learned it!

What advice could you give to someone who wanted to pursue a career in the performing arts?
Work, train, work, train, work, train, etc. You are never the best. Always push yourself to be better at whatever you can. Learn, work, train, etc. Diversify your skills as well. Know how to market yourself for casting: know what you're right for and what you aren't right for.

Have there been any other productions that have influenced your life?
I remember when I was 3 years old, my parents took me to see Starlight Express in London. My parents, in their ways to embarrass and scar me for life, dressed me in a sailor uniform, which included a whistle as an accessory. During the bows, I blew my whistle, and one of the performers waved to me. That was pretty cool... I never forgot it.

Have you had any sort of odd jobs in between shows?
Not many. I worked as a production assistant for television since I was 13. I once sang Christmas Carols at a Birthday Party for Pamela Anderson's kid.

Who, or what, inspired you to pursue a career in acting?
I guess I might say "So many things". One of which was not wanting to be a computer programmer (which I had decided my freshman year of high school).

How has your career evolved?
I went from being a kid who wanted so much to be a Performer to a working professional who understands the business. I know where I have come from and where I want to go.
