Dana DeLisa Takes On A
Loverly Role in My Fair Lady
In the year of 1956, the Broadway production of 'My Fair Lady' first debuted at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City. Merely eight years later, the rights to the show were purchased, and a film adaption was to be made. It was then that America fell in love with the dowdy flower-girl, Eliza Doolittle, then played by Audrey Hepburn. Even now you can still hear people quoting the award winning show, rattling off the popular phrase, "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plains..."As the National Tour makes its way across the country, the actors now portraying these timeless characters, are bringing new life to their roles, as they add their own special touches to the show. Dana DeLisa, who has the incredibly exciting, yet difficult task of playing Eliza Doolittle, views this opportunity as a dream come true. As a long time admirer of this production, she notes that it was in fact, Audrey Hepburn who sparked her interest in acting. "I have all of her movies!" She said, with a laugh.
Another thing that DeLisa pointed out, is that audience members will have to let go of the idea that the performance will mirror that by Hepburn. As she clearly states, she does not look, nor sound like the famous actress. And perhaps, it's for the best. Upon joining the cast, her director informed her that Hepburn's Cockney accent, was done really poorly! That certainly would come as a shock to a lot of people.
In this role, there is an endless amount of things to be learned from the character. She is fiery, uncouth, yet very devoted to her ideals. And now as Dana DeLisa travels the country, performing in this particularly amazing role, she is able to experience this first hand, while achieving one of her longtime dreams. What's next, for the loverly actress? She hopes to dip into a comedy, such as 'Avenue Q,' or perhaps set her sights on 'Wicked.'
