Review: MTV's The City
Cameras, clubs, couture: No it’s not Los Angeles. It’s New York City. The City. Last Monday, MTV aired the new reality show The City with Hills star Whitney as the leading lady. The show depicts Whitney in her new life in the Big Apple, after moving from her LA home to pursue her career in the fashion industry, among other things.I must confess that I have never much been a fan of The Hills. It might be that I still hold a grudge against MTV for choosing Laguna Beach instead of Chaparral High School as the basis for their reality show about spoiled teenagers. The Hills was a sequel to this show, the stars being Laguna Beach Alums. Not that Chaparral wasn’t given the chance, which they were, but turned down anyways. But just saying. I mean, who knows who would be starring in the show if it took place in Scottsdale as, The Desert? Or The Cacti? Or something?
I first became curious about the show after watching a preview commercial. I must confess that it was the scene of Whitney chatting, starry-eyed, over dinner with her love interest, Jay, that piqued my interest. I’m not saying I have something for long, shaggy hair, rock singers, or Aussie accents, but he was kind of cute. Kind of sort of. Okay, really cute! And then I really wanted to see if she ended up with him. And if his personality was as much of a warm-fuzzy as his hair was.
So, not knowing what to expect, and with only a couple episodes of The Hills under my belt, I sat down to watch. Instantly I was captivated by Whitney and her lifestyle, which appeared to be a real-life yet slightly more believable version of Gossip Girl, minus the sex and drugs. Her and her other gorgeous friends work backstage with the biggest names in fashion in a fashion show at Bryant Park, followed by dates with ultimate hotties, parties with socialites, with some scandal and intrigue thrown in to make it all the more interesting. But underneath it all, you can see that Whitney is just as amazed by all of it as we the viewers are, and that is what makes the show truly enjoyable. That even though you’re not the 5’9” blonde bombshell parading around in Monolos with Diane von Furstenberg and Austalian-windblown-haired-rock stars, you could be. That because of her I now believe it is possible for you to see me, 10 years from now when I graduate, move out on my own, and tower over my current 5’2” stature, arriving, thriving, and taking life by storm, in The City.
So in the words of Nicole Scherzinger, who belts out the show’s theme song, “Gimme them bright lights, long nights, party till the sun is rising.”
