Teen Hero: Carlos Hernandez

Carlos Hernandez
Meet azTeen hero Carlos Hernandez '07, Washington High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Carlos has the unique honor of representing Phoenix teens in not one, but two significant ways.

First, he is the chairman of The Phoenix Youth Committee. This group’s main focus is to organize youth programs for Phoenix and give grants to schools around the city. The Phoenix Youth Committee is comprised of two representatives from each school district, all appointed by the Mayor of Phoenix. This is Carlos’ second term with the prestigous group.

Carlos is likewise honored to be a member of the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission, a non-profit organization that promotes international relations, especially among teens. It was through this group that Carlos spent three weeks in China with a host family this past summer. There he attended a Chinese school, met with government officials, visited the Panda conservation site, and saw a giant golden Buddha. “I have traveled so much before, but it is very different traveling as a tourist versus going with a mission,” Carlos said. As part of the sister cities program, the Chinese boys from the host family then came to the U.S. to spend three weeks in Arizona.

Carlos is very capable in the way he handles both school and community involvement. He has plans to travel to Mexico for a Model U.N. Conference and then to Prague as the only teen representative from Phoenix at the International Youth Leadership Conference later this year. Carlos observes that “it is amazing to be able to work with so many outstanding young men and women from all around the globe.”

As far as the future goes, a path leading to politics may be in the works for Carlos. If not politics, Carlos hopes to work with city councils and mayors. Wherever his destiny takes him, you’ll be sure to find Carlos influencing the world with every step.
