Marco Rosales. The WOW Factor.
I have talked to few people who honestly leave with me a lasting “WOW” impression, but Marco Rosales is definitely one of them. He proudly carries his strong convictions as well as a passion for doing what is right. After talking with Marco, I felt that I may have just been speaking with the future President of the United States or perhaps a young visionary turned philanthropist like Bill Gates; but invariably, I have a keen feeling it just may be both.Marco is the Student Body President at West View High School and holds a seat on the esteemed Student Principals Cabinet. He is a decorated athlete, an after-school parks recreation assistant, and an active member of the West View High Unity Program. The Unity Program comes from Anytown, a school-affiliated camp that teaches the participants about acceptance and unity. It was at an early age that Marco developed his views of racial oneness by simply following in his parent’s work with the Chicano Movement, an activism group made up of Mexican-Americans. The teachings of the CM plus attendance at The Unity Program with like-minded others are what truly helped mature Marco’s belief in not only himself but in the world around him.
In many respects, Marco is a typical teenager. He loves to take in TV shows like those on the Food Network or simply absorb the day’s political events on “The Daily Show.” He is a fan of all the quintessential boy movies from “Fight Club” to “Gladiator,” and is even proficient on the strings of a guitar. Whether he is playing, listening or writing music, Marco will tell you, “Music is the purest form of expression and communication that we as people can have.”
The reason that Marco decided to begin playing music in the first place is because communication is such a huge part of his life. He has big ideas and takes pleasure in sharing them with others. It should come as no surprise that the people who inspire Marco the most are the ones who communicate with him on a daily basis—his teachers and family. “They’ve devoted their lives to bettering others through teaching activism and awareness.”
After he graduates from the University of Notre Dame, Marco hopes to become a college professor, start a family with a couple of kids and live out the entire white picket fence American dream. In addition to this ideal life, however, Marco wants to remain ever diligent to continue to “Do everything in my power to ensure social justice.”
Currently, Marco is sifting through his options on the dating horizon; but with his charming smile and confident persona, he won’t be for long. An idealist with passion and true intellectual curiosity, Marco is an amazing person and an inspiration to the young who would feel inclined to “do their part” in the community…just as Marco does and always will.
