Melissa Dunmore
Melissa Dunmore, a senior at Notre Dame Preparatory Academy, is just like any other teenager, attending high school, hanging out with friends and planning for “after graduation”. But, unlike other teenagers, Melissa has dedicated herself to helping people who are currently experiencing horrendous tragedies in Darfur, Sudan, a small country in Africa. After the ADL (Anti Defamation League) National Youth Leadership Mission trip to DC, last fall, Melissa felt drawn to help the people suffering in Darfur. And, after reading the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, she learned even more about the widespread murders in Darfur, Sudan, which began in 2003 and still sadly continue today. Melissa knew she wanted to get involved and help stop these terrible crimes against humanity. With the help of the ADL, this has become a reality. She has had the opportunity to make many contributions toward the peace efforts through The Darfur Genocide Project.
Melissa posts flyers and presents slide shows to make people aware of what is going on in Darfur. Like Melissa, you can make a difference by getting involved. Melissa would like to encourage you to help in the cause to stop the genocide in Darfur. Even the smallest efforts can make a big difference.
Some independent organizations dedicated to victims of genocide include:
Anti Defamation League
Save Darfur
STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur)
Amnesty USA
Res Publica Darfur Advocacy Project
