Arizona Teen Gets "Awakening"

For the last two years, rock musical Spring Awakening has captivated the minds of audiences, and redefined Broadway. Fans everywhere are singing along with the soundtrack and bopping their heads with the music. One Arizona thespian was given the chance to go further than that though. Krystina Alabado of Mesa is now officially one of the cast members of the first national Spring Awakening tour.

It all started when Alabado saw the 2007 Tony Award performance by the Broadway cast of Spring Awakening. Shortly after, she learned that they would be holding auditions for the tour. On a whim, she flew to Boston. It never really occured to her that she might actually get this once in a lifetime opportunity. And yet sure enough, she received a call from the producers. Krystina Alabado had made it; she was a swing, and an understudy for all female characters.

For Alabado, the tour is "like a dream." Everyone is like "one big family," and she's very thankful for the opportunity. Musical theatre has always been something that she's enojyed, though. She started singing at a young age, and in junior high moved on to the performing arts. Her first role was in Damn Yankees, and more recently she starred in High School Musical as 'Gabriella Montez.' Simply put, Alabado has an undeniable talent on stage.
